Andoany, also known as Hell-Ville, is the main population center on the island of Nosy Be. Founded by the French in 1841, and named in honor of the French admiral Anne Chrétien Louis de Hell, Hell-Ville is one of the oldest colonial cities in Madagascar. In 1960, after independence, it was officially renamed Andoany, but the old colonial denomination is still used by the local population.
