The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is an archaeological site in Madagascar. It is located about 24 km east of the capital Antananarivo: the site is occupied by a fortified village with several houses, together with the burials of some members of the royal family of Imerina, the ethnic community that held power in the 19th century and politically united large part of the island of Madagascar in one nation.
Ambohimanga, one of the twelve sacred hills of the Imerina, is strongly associated with national identity, maintaining a sacred and symbolic value for all the population who go there on pilgrimage.
