The Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca is a botanical garden and managed by the city. It is open every day during the warmer months and weekdays out of season. An admission fee is charged. The garden was founded in 1820 by Maria Luisa, Duchess of Parma, and contains a number of mature plants of botanical interest. Its site is roughly triangular, located within a corner of Lucca's walls, and organized into two main sections. One contains the gardens proper to an arboretum, a pond and small plantings; the other contains the greenhouse, the botanical school and the laboratories. The "Cesare Bicchi" Botanical Museum contains a herbarium and an archive.
