The Guinigi Tower is the most important tower in Lucca. It is a typical example of local Romanesque-Gothic architecture. This tower is one of the few remaining within the city walls. Its main feature is its sky garden on the roof of the tower. The tower was donated to the local government by descendants of the Guinigi family. The tower dates back to the 1300s when numerous wealthy families built bell towers within the walls of Lucca as symbols of status. The kitchen was originally on the lower level with the roof serving as a vegetable garden.
