The Palácio Nacional da Pena is a palace/castle, located on the hills of the Portuguese city of Sintra, a town in the center, near Lisbon, built after 1840 by Maria II of Braganza, on the ruins of a 15th century Gerolamite convent and designed by the German architect and baron Ludwig von Eschwege. The palace is under the protection of UNESCO, from which it was included in the World Heritage Site (like all the historic center of Sintra) in 1995, and on July 7, 2007 it was elected one of the 7 wonders of Portugal.
