The Jerónimos Monastery ("of the Hieronymites") is located in the Belém neighborhood of the city of Lisbon. Built in the Manueline style to a design by the architect Diogo de Boitaca, it was built by King Manuel I to celebrate the return of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, after discovering the route to India. The monastery is a celebration of the Portuguese nation's most important historical period and constitutes one of the most important tourist attractions in Lisbon.
