The Tower of Bethlehem or, more commonly, the Tower of Belém (Portuguese: Torre de Belém) is a fortified tower located in the friguesia of Santa Maria de Belém, in the municipality of Lisbon. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (together with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery), a symbol and reminder of the important role Portugal played in the age of great explorations.
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prime example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure consists of a 30-metre bastion with four towers.[1]
