Ryōan-ji

The zen garden of Ryōan-ji

Zen temple located in Kyoto. This complex also includes several minor temples and a large garden with an artificial lake.

In 1450, Hosokawa Katsumoto took possession of the land, had his palace built there, and sponsored the founding of Ryōan-ji. The temple was destroyed during the Ōnin War, and later rebuilt by Hosokawa Matsumoto, son of Katsumoto, starting in 1488.
