Nijo Castle is a fortified complex in Nakagyo - ku, in Kyoto, built starting from 1601/1603 at the behest of Tokugawa Ieyasu , the first shogun of the Edo period. 23 years later, his nephew completed the construction, and until the end of the 19th century the castle was used as an imperial palace. A particular feature of the interiors are the "nightingale floors", so called because, every time they are walked on, the clamps and nails placed under the surface rub against each other, producing a sound reminiscent of the cry of a nightingale.
