Kyoto Imperial Palace is the former reigning palace of the Emperor of Japan. Emperors resided in the imperial palace until 1869 and its conservation was ordered in 1877. The palace is surrounded by a large rectangular enclosure, which also contains the gardens of the imperial palace of Sento.
It has been destroyed and rebuilt eight times, including six times during the 250-year peace of the Edo period. The current version was completed in 1855, in an attempt to reproduce Heian era architecture. Today the grounds are open to the public and the Imperial Household Agency organizes public tours of the building several times a day.
