The Dome of the Rock, sometimes improperly called the Mosque of the Rock, is an Islamic sanctuary built on a site, used and considered sacred in times prior to the formation of the three major monotheistic religions, known as "Mosque Temple" by Muslims and "Temple Mount" " by the Jews. Together with the al-Aqsa Mosque, it forms the al-Ḥaram al-Sharīf, considered by Sunnism to be the third holiest site in the Islamic world after the Kaʿba and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. Completed in 691 by Byzantine artists and workers, it is, according to some, the oldest Islamic building in the world that still exists today.
