Built in 1542 by the Ottoman Emperor Suleiman the Magnificent, the Damascus Gate (also known as Shechem Gate or Nablus Gate) is one of the most renowned architectural beauties in the Old City of Jerusalem. The entrance, extraordinarily massive, is flanked on both sides by imposing stone towers. The grandeur of the gate is further accentuated by the presence of a wide and deep staircase which connects the gate with the highest level of the street.
