Gli straordinari colori di Grand Prismatic Spring

Il Grand Prismatic Spring nel Parco nazionale di Yellowstone è la più grande sorgente calda negli Stati Uniti, e la terza più grande del mondo, dopo Frying Pan Lake in Nuova Zelanda e Boiling Lake in Dominica. Esso si trova nel Midway Geyser Basin ed situato a circa 12 chilometri a Nord del celebre geyser Old Faithful. Il Grand Prismatic Spring fu scoperto dai geologi durante la spedizione Hayden del 1871 e venne da essi così battezzato per la sua sorprendente colorazione. I suoi colori corrispondono a quelli di un arcobaleno generati dalla dispersione della luce bianca da parte di un prisma ottico: rosso, arancione, giallo, verde e blu.

Wow! I could see the mist of the spring from miles away. As I approached the spring, it’s almost as if I was on another planet. I felt like I was engulfed by clouds. The soil around the spring consists of an extremely thick padding of bacteria, which causes the colors of the soil to be rich and contrasting. The size of the spring is pretty impressive as well. I’m not sure of the measurements off hand but there are signs offering information around the spring. The path that leads to the spring is essentially a narrow boardwalk with no barriers so I would definitely suggest wearing shoes with great traction/ footing. If you are traveling with little ones, keep a close eye and tight grip on them. The contrast of the breeze from the trees and the warmth of the spring was invigorating and quite the experience. There is parking right by the spring. There are quite a few steps to take to get to the actual spring, so be prepared for that. All in all, I would most certainly recommend the Grand Prismatic Spring! It’s truly captivating to see the wonders of the earth and the science we learn of as kids in action, up close and personal!
