The Central-Mid levels escalator is an articulated system of escalators and self-propelled sidewalks that connects the Central District with the Western District of Hong Kong. The project proposal materialized already in November 1987, when the government decided to address the problem of the growing car traffic in the area. Inaugurated on 15 October 1993, it is today one of the most used public transport systems in the area. With its approximately 800 meters in length, it is considered the longest covered system of outdoor escalators and transports around 85,000 people every day.
