Tierpark Hagenbeck started life in 1848 with just a group of seals, and went on to become one of the most beautiful zoos in Germany. Here, together with your children, you can closely observe elephants, orangutans, sea lions, Siberian tigers and many other animal species from different parts of the world. The habitats reproduced are very different from each other: from the vast plains of the African savannah to the immense Arctic Ocean.
The collection began in 1863 with animals that belonged to Carl Hagenbeck Sr. (1810–1887), a fishmonger who became an amateur animal collector. The park itself was founded by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. in 1907. It is known for being the first zoo to use open enclosures surrounded by moats, rather than barred cages, to better approximate animals' natural environments.
