The Ohlsdorf cemetery is a monumental cemetery in the German city of Hamburg, located in the Ohlsdorf district (Hamburg-North district) and built in stages between 1874 and 1877 (opening date), between 1896 and 1900 and between 1914 and 1920.
With its 391-404/405 hectares of extension it is not only the main city cemetery, but also the largest cemetery in Europe and the largest civil cemetery in the western world, as well as the second or third cemetery in absolute terms in the world.Alla During the course of history, architects and sculptors, around 330 people took part in the construction of the complex. The main authors of the project were Wilhelm Cordes and Otto Linne. Over 1.7 million people of various religions have been buried so far in the Ohlsdorf cemetery (as of 2009), numerous personalities associated with the city of Hamburg are also buried here.
