The magnificent Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II is undoubtedly the most unusual monument in Graz. It harmoniously combines the mannerist character of the Austrian Baroque and the theatrical splendor of the great churches of Rome. The work begun by the Italian Pietro de Pomis was in fact completed with the stucco and fresco decoration by Fischer von Erlach, a native of Graz. A beautiful oval dome adorns the funerary crypt where a large red marble sarcophagus dominates.
