Located in the area between the Aquarium and the Maritime Station, the museum is housed in the oldest building of the old dock, once the Arsenal of the Republic of Genoa. Here, starting from 1500, the galleys of the Genoese fleet were built and equipped. Today, in continuity with the past, the Galata is home to the Sea Museum, with an architectural reconstruction of great value, designed by Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. Thanks to an exhibition spread over five floors, and to an Open Air Museum whose main attraction is the Submarine S518 Nazario Sauro - the first Italian floating museum -, the Galata is currently the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean.
