The Palazzo Ducale in Genoa is one of the main historic buildings and museums of the Ligurian capital, formerly the seat of the dogate of the ancient Republic. Left abandoned for a long time and used as the seat of the judicial offices before the construction of the new Portoria courthouse in the seventies, it saw its restoration completed on the occasion of the 1992 "Colombia Games", which commemorated Christopher Columbus and the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. On the main floor, it hosts important art exhibitions, debates and conferences (organized in the frescoed halls of the Major and Minor Councils) and, in the courtyards and arcades, shops and refreshment points. The building is managed by the foundation "Genova Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura" which has divided the spaces into multiple functions. Inside it, events can also occur simultaneously in dedicated spaces. Inside the building there are also the headquarters of many cultural associations. In 2001, the heads of state and government met in Genoa for the G8 in congress.
