Rovigno, in Croatian Rovinj, is a town of 14,367 inhabitants in southwestern Istria, in Croatia. Geologically, the Rovinj area, like that of the rest of Istria, is characterized by karst-type rock formations, in fact there are many underground rivers and sinkholes formed by these, also called sinkholes. The wide white beaches of limestone or Istrian stone were once red due to the strong presence of bauxite in the soil, a presence that can still be seen in the surface soil today.
