Gorski Kotar (literally mountainous region) is a vast plateau in Croatia, belonging to the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Region. This area borders Slovenia to the north, has an average altitude of about 800 meters and covers about 1,273 km², with an average width of 35 km. The climate is continental, characterized by short, cool summers and long winters: the average annual temperature barely exceeds 7°C. In Gorski Kotar there is the Risnjak National Park, established in 1953.
