Brissac Castle was originally a medieval fortress built by the counts of Anjou in the 11th century. It was rebuilt in the 15th century by Pierre de Brézé, minister of King Charles VII, who bequeathed it to his son Jacques, whose sad fate is known. Married to Charlotte de Valois, daughter of Charles VII and Agnes Sorel, Jacques de Brézé surprised his wife in another man's bed: blinded by anger, he killed the two lovers with his own sword. Legend has it that Charlotte's ghost still hovers today among the rooms of the castle during storms.
