Before being joined to the possessions of the royal crown of France in 1434, the castle belonged, for more than four centuries, to the powerful d'Amboise family. During the Renaissance, it was many times the residence of different kings of France. It was partially destroyed after the Revolution: the royal residences, the chapel of Saint-Hubert where the presumed remains of Leonardo da Vinci rest, the terraces and towers that give the monument a completely unique shape remained from Charles VIII's project.
