Château de Villandry

Castle Châteaux of the Loire Valley, France

The last of the great Renaissance castles built on the Loire Château de Villandry

The castle of Villandry, completed in 1536, was the last of the large castles built on the banks of the Loire during the Renaissance. Villandry was built by Jean le Breton, one of the finance ministers François I, whose coat of arms is visible on the left pediment of the dormer. In order to build the current castle, Jean Le Breton razed an ancient 12th century castle to the ground, of which only the old tower that is seen behind the main courtyard is preserved.
