The District Six Museum is a museum located in the city's former residential district, District Six, in Cape Town. The District Six Foundation was established in 1989 and the museum in 1994, as a memorial to the forced movement of 60,000 people of various races into District Six during Apartheid South Africa in the 1970s. The floor of the museum is covered with a large map of the district with handwritten notes from former inhabitants, indicating where their homes were. One former resident is jazz musician, Abdullah Ibrahim, better known by his stage name Dollar Brand. Other pieces in the museum are old street signs, exhibits of historic moments and lives of families in the area, historical statements, and demolition exhibits.
