The sanctuary of Santa Maria della Vita is located in via Clavature 10, in the historic center of Bologna, a few steps from piazza Maggiore. The church, which bears the title of sanctuary, was enlarged between 1454 and 1502 and rebuilt at the end of the century. XVII by the architect G.B. Bergonzoni after a catastrophic collapse of the ceiling in 1686. The dome was raised in 1787 to a design by Giuseppe Tubertini. The interior, with elegant and airy lines on an elliptical plan, is characterized by the famous plastic group of the Pietà, "Lamentation of the Dead Christ", one of the most vigorous and expressive masterpieces of Italian sculpture, modeled in the second half of the 15th century by Niccolò dell 'Ark.
