The Victory Column is one of the most famous monuments in Berlin. It was designed in 1864 by Heinrich Strack, to commemorate Prussia's victory in the Prussian-Danish War, and opened on 2 September 1873.
Contrary to the original plans, a bronze sculpture of Victory 8.3 m high and weighing 35 tons was added. The sculpture, by Friedrich Drake, was added to celebrate Prussia's victories over Austria and France. The overall height is 66.89 m. Berliners call it Goldelse, Elsa d'Oro. Surrounded by a large busy roundabout, the Großer Stern, pedestrians can reach the column through four tunnels.
