The Altes Museum is a museum in Berlin, part of the so-called Museum Island. The museum was built according to the canons of neoclassical architecture between 1823 and 1828 by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
As the original name suggested, it was initially conceived to house the royal family's art collection. It then ended up hosting ancient finds of various kinds. It opened its doors to the public in 1830 as the first public museum in Prussia. Today it houses the ancient collection of the Berlin State Museums, and hosted, pending the reopening of the Neues Museum (in 2009), the Egyptian Museum.
