The Brandenburg Gate is a neoclassical gate, symbol of the city of Berlin. It is located on the western side of the Pariser Platz in the Mitte district bordering the Tiergarten district.
Opened to traffic on 6 August 1791, the gate was built starting in 1788 by Carl Gotthard Langhans, who was inspired by the reconstruction of the Propylaea in Athens. It is currently depicted on some coins (10, 20 and 50 euro cents) issued by the German mint. It is the most famous monument in Berlin and is known throughout the world as a symbol of the city itself.
