The Berlin Cathedral is the main church of Germany, and is located in the Mitte district, on the Schloßplatz. The original church was built around the mid-18th century to a design by Johann Boumann in the Baroque style.
In 1894, Emperor Wilhelm II ordered the demolition of the church and its reconstruction. Work began immediately, designed by architect Julius Raschdorff in a sumptuous neo-baroque style, and was completed in 1905. The internal structure of the church is a Greek cross with a large circular hall at the intersection of the arms and a deep apse on the side opposite the main portal.
