The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is the ancient cathedral of Assisi, dating back to the early years of Christianity, built close to the Roman walls according to tradition by Bishop Savinio in the 4th century and preserves a 9th century crypt. Its past is testified by the fact that it rises above the remains of a Roman building which, according to tradition, was the home of the poet Properzio, author of the "Elegies".
