Many mistakenly believe that the Cathedral of Assisi is the Papal Basilica of San Francesco. Nothing could be more wrong ... in Assisi the Cathedral is on the opposite side of the city (a little above the Basilica of Santa Chiara) and is consecrated to San Rufino, martyr bishop of the 3rd century. The richly sculpted facade represents one of the highest examples of Romanesque art. The interior, renovated in the 16th century, retains the baptismal font in which Saint Francis, Saint Clare and, according to tradition, also Frederick II of Swabia were baptised.
