The Basilica of imposing dimensions (it is the seventh in order of magnitude among the Christian churches) basically does not suit the Franciscan dictates of simplicity, however it was necessary to be able to accommodate the masses of pilgrims visiting the Porziuncola, the Chapel of S. Maria degli Angeli, which St. Francis received as a gift from the Benedictines of Subasio and which became the nucleus of the first convent, and to the Cappella del Transito, the place where St. Francis died on 4 October 1226.
