The Basilica of San Francesco is a basilica in Assisi. It is the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi. As a basilica maior, it has been one of the seven highest-ranking Catholic churches since 1756. The basilica is decorated in the upper and lower church with important Renaissance paintings, including Giotto di Bondone. It was badly damaged in an earthquake on September 26, 1997 and restored with enormous effort. The Basilica of San Francesco has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000, together with a series of Franciscan sites in the Umbrian area.
