Dam Square or Dam is the main city square of Amsterdam. It is roughly rectangular in shape, extending about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south. At the western end of the square is the neoclassical Palazzo Reale; instead on the opposite side of the square is the National Monument, built to remember the victims of the Second World War. The notable buildings and frequent events make this square one of the best known and most important places in the city and in the country.
